Beads of Courage

Beads of Courage:

the mission statement
To promote the well-being of children coping with serious illness, and their families, by strengthening resilience-based protective processes. Beads of Courage, Inc. achieves its mission through the development and implementation of evidence-based supportive care programs in children's hospitals across the nation.

what is the program?
Beads of CourageŽ is a resilience-based intervention designed to support and strengthen the protective resources in children coping with serious illness. Through the program children tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path.

La Mia Felicita is pleased to participate is such a wonderful program.  On Tuesday morning (9/04) we will be shipping out all of the handmade beads that everyone has made or donated.

The New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NHSPCA) is a community resource center bringing animals and people together. They provide adoption, education, investigation and sheltering services in a professional and compassionate way. They receive no federal or state funding and rely solely on community donations and the sponsorship renewals of their Adoption Angel and Education Angel members to support their operations and care for the animals. They also depend on the generosity of more than 200 individuals who dedicate their time and talents to help the animals by volunteering. Their Adoption Center receives more than 4,000 unwanted, neglected or abused animals in their region. They provide each one with a warm bed, loving care, and take every step possible to place them in the best possible new home.

La Mia Felicita participated in Plaistow's Old Home Days celebration on June 30th in the Plaistow Commons.  It was a beautiful day, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.  Our booth was set up over near the gazebo, with Phyllis Carifio and Emily Blair selling their wonderful jewelry in the booth next to us.  Mrs. LuAnn Blair from the Plaistow Public Library assisted us in helping people make their Treasure Chest Bead bracelets.  These bracelets sold for $3.50 and 15% of the daily sales was donated to the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

La Mia Felicita is a strong advocate of the Blue Ribbon Campaign to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect.  Cathy has designed a bracelet and earrings that are specifically for the Blue Ribbon Campaign.  If you are interested in finding out more about this charity or the jewelry, please contact Cathy for additional information.

MISSION: During the past several years, the blue ribbon has been widely recognized as a national symbol of child abuse awareness. This movement began in the spring of 1989, when a Norfolk, Virginia grandmother, Bonnie Finney, took a stand against child abuse after experiencing the death of her grandson. She tied a blue ribbon to her van as a memorial for her 3 year-old grandson, who was murdered by his mother's abusive boyfriend. The spirit of her blue ribbon grew, and others have joined her in using blue ribbons as reminders of the bruises of child abuse. Each year thousands of ribbons are distributed nationally to organizations and individuals interested in preventing child abuse and neglect

La Mia Felicita is a proud participant in the U.S. Marine Corp Toys For Tots Foundation effort.  In addition to donating to the program, La Mia Felicita was a Drop-Off Location for the 2006 Christmas season.  Cathy plans on continuing that tradition for the upcoming years.

MISSION: The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

La Mia Felicita supports Julie Hagel, Sherie Bourgeois, and Beverly Gaudet for their contributions to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  Their team, the Pink Angels of Hope, spend months training to prepare for a walk that spans an entire weekend.  Each of them need to raise a minimum of $1,800 in donations.  For more information, you can check out their 2007 team web site.

PINK ANGELS OF HOPE:
For 2 days and 39 miles, everyone who has been touched by breast cancer touches you - in gratitude. Your participation in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer events - as a Walker, a Crew Member, a Volunteer or a Donor - will allow medically underserved women and men to be treated giving them access to the care they require. And hard-working research teams will be powered by the funds they need to fuel their quest for the cure.
